I'm now doing my second big project with Claude Code, not an experiment, and we're going through the same mess we went through last time. I know what I want, I can show it what I want, give it docs for what I want, and it keeps leading me into different corners that have nothing to do with it. When it clicks, it can go faster than a thousand programmers and it's a miracle, and when we can harness it to the job we want to do it's incredibly economical. $100 for $1 million of work. That's why you see me full of gusto for that mode. What I haven't written about how when you slow to nothing, back and forth, and you get no closer. I hate this kind of work, esp the role I have to play in it. -

A tech news reader with a swipe deck instead of an infinite feed offline saves, no account, English/French/Arabic
The part I care about most is the Deck. Instead of scrolling a feed forever, you get one story at a time as a card. Swipe right and it unfolds into the reader, swipe left and it's gone and the next one springs up. The card rotates with your finger and the keep/skip stamps fade in as you drag, so you can feel the commit point before you let go. It turns "I have 40 tabs open" into a two-minute triage.
The rest:
Reader is clutter-free — article text, adjustable size, nothing else. No related-content grid, no newsletter interstitial.
Offline reading is a toggle, and it's real: flip it on and every story you've saved gets its full content pulled down at launch, so Saved works on a plane or in a tunnel. Off by default, because it costs bandwidth and I'd rather you opt in.

I'm looking into how to document privacy for an RSS-based, federated service, and I'd love to see how others have handled it.
Specifically: what happens to a post once it leaves your server — syndicated over RSS, cached, crossposted to another instance, or shown by third-party readers? I'm based in Europe, so I'm especially keen on examples that aren't written purely from a US angle. Not looking for legal advice — mostly how people have actually thought about it.
A couple of decisions I ended up making, as discussion starters (and because I'd genuinely like to hear if others went a different way):
Erasure vs. federation. Once a post has been crossposted to another server, my take is that actual removal over there is up to that server (caches, archives) — we request the takedown, but can't guarantee it. How do you word this without either over-promising or scaring people off?
Traces after deletion. When an account is deleted, its old public address returns a permanent "account withdrawn" (HTTP 410) — which still reveals that a handle once existed. I chose to spell that out rather than pretend deletion is total. Does anyone handle this differently?

The 4th book in the Extracted series, RR Haywood continues to make these books great.
It's a complete pivot from the first trilogy of books. Same characters, but completely different storyline. The book ends with "to be continued..." so I'm hoping this will be another trilogy of books, as the story is just getting started. Great series of books, highly recommended.
A few people have recommended Dungeon Crawler Carl to me, and I think I'm in the mood for something with a little more humour. So that's what I'm going to start reading next.

Feedrion: A Cross-Platform RSS Reader with Spoiler Protection, Local AI, Text-to-Speech, and Offline Reading
Hello everyone,
I would like to introduce Feedrion, a new application for reading and aggregating RSS feeds, YouTube channels, Google News feeds, and more, similar to Feedly or Inoreader, but with innovative new features. Available on web (https://feedrion.com), andoid, wear os.

A little background: I previously used Netvibes. After it was discontinued, I switched to Feedly, but I never really enjoyed using it, especially its Android application. So I decided to create my own RSS reader.
My goal was to build a simple and enjoyable application with several features that I found difficult to find elsewhere.
Main Features
🛡️ Spoiler Protection
Are you following a TV series, a sport, a video game, or a competition?
Add the keywords you want to avoid, and Feedrion will automatically hide titles and previews that might contain spoilers. You can reveal them whenever you choose.
This is actually the main reason I created the application: I was tired of getting spoiled simply by checking my RSS feeds.
🤖 AI-Powered Summaries and Translations
You can use your own API key from Claude, OpenAI, Groq, OpenRouter, Cerebras, or other compatible providers to:
- generate article summaries;
- translate content;
- choose the AI model;
- customize the instructions used.
Requests are sent directly from your device to the provider you select. Your API key and data never pass through Feedrion’s servers.
Some providers, such as Groq and Cerebras, offer free usage quotas that may be sufficient for personal use.
📴 Offline Reading and Synchronization
Articles are stored locally so that you can read them without an internet connection.
As soon as your connection is restored, your data is synchronized. Read articles, saved items, folders, and preferences follow you across your devices, particularly Android and the Web.
🔊 Text-to-Speech
Feedrion can read articles aloud, making it convenient to listen while walking, cooking, or travelling.

You can:
- organize your sources into folders;
- quickly mark articles as read;
- save articles for later;
- search through your content;

Receive a notification or an email whenever a new article contains a keyword or topic that interests you.

I’ve been building SignalCaster, an app for people who manage websites, blogs, RSS feeds, or multiple social channels and want to spend less time doing repetitive publishing work.
SignalCaster connects your RSS feeds, collects new articles, and helps you organize, schedule, and publish content across supported social platforms.
The idea is simple: instead of constantly checking feeds, copying links, preparing posts, and publishing them one by one, SignalCaster brings that workflow together in one place.

Podcast hosting platforms and apps that support HLS video in RSS
The beauty of RSS in podcasting is that you only need to publish your episodes in one place. Until recently, to do a video podcast, you had to publish video episodes outside your RSS feed (on YouTube or by uploading them manually to Spotify). But now, using HLS and the podcast:alternateEnclosure tag, you can publish video to your podcast’s RSS feed. Audio-only podcast apps will continue to play the audio version, but podcast apps that support HLS will be able to offer consumers the video podcast experience. These apps currently support HLS video from RSS: Pocket Casts Amazon Music (in beta) iHeart (manual submission) Fountain True Fans Podcast Guru Podcast Addict Currently, Apple Podcasts uses HLS to deliver video in its app, but you have to submit HLS video episodes via its proprietary API (it won’t consume HLS video from the RSS feed). What is HLS? HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) is a streaming protocol Apple developed back in 2009. It’s the same technology behind most of the video you already watch on the internet (Netflix, YouTube, etc all use it). Instead of one giant file, HLS breaks your video into small segments (usually 2 to 10 seconds each) and publishes a manifest file (.m3u8) that lists them. The player reads the manifest, and streams your media segment by segment. The benefits for the consumer are: You can start watching immediately. Quality adjusts to your connection. On Wi-Fi, HLS might upgrade the resolution to 1080p; on a poor 3G connection, the player drops to a lower bitrate. RSS technically supported video before this. You could put an MP4 in your enclosure tag. But that meant asking every listener to download a multi-gigabyte file before they could watch anything, What is alternateEnclosure tag? podcast:alternateEnclosure is a tag from the podcast namespace. It lets you offer additional versions of media in you podcast’s RSS feed for an episode alongside the standard audio enclosure. Why does this matter for the open podcast ecosystem? HLS in RSS is open by design: there’s no proprietary API, which means any hosting company can publish it, and any podcast app can support it. From a podcaster’s perspective, it’s a simple solution. Instead of having to upload your video episodes to multiple places, you just upload your media to one place. Your RSS feed remains the single source of truth for your podcast (which is the way it should be!). Built a no-tracking Canadian news reader this summer, would love some brutally honest feedback
Been doing web dev as my day job for a few years now, and this summer I finally built something for myself instead of clients.
I got tired of scrolling through five different news sites every morning, half of which needed a cookie popup dismissed and were mixing in a ton of US headlines I didn't ask for. So I built North Wire — pulls from CBC, CTV, Global News, Financial Post, BBC, that kind of source list. No account, no cookies, no tracking. Just headlines.
You can add it straight to your home screen from your phone's browser — no App Store needed, nothing to download. It's in beta right now, and there's a feedback form built right into it — genuinely want to know what's broken or annoying before I keep building on it.
Full disclosure: I run a small web design shop in Chilliwack, this was a side project to keep my skills sharp and scratch my own itch. Not trying to sell anyone anything, just sharing since I figured other people might be as tired of the algorithm-chasing headlines as I am.

China isn’t simply a regime with a centrally planned technological machine.
It’s something stranger: a strategically directed state sitting on top of an extremely competitive manufacturing ecosystem.
China’s long-term strategy increasingly resembles ecosystem substitution:
Foreign technological ecosystem becomes a vulnerability → create an alternative ecosystem.
Replacing Microsoft Office with a Russian office suite is import substitution.
Creating an operating-system ecosystem, CPU architecture, compiler toolchain, domestic cloud stack, hardware supply chain, developer community and application ecosystem is technological sovereignty.
China is attempting the latter.

“An Absolute Climate Catastrophe”

So there is lots that you will hear — lots of rhetoric, lots of good words, lots of optimism about the future. But given we’ve known about this subject and apparently been working on it for 30 years, the trend line tells us that we are heading towards three to four degrees centigrade of warming across this century: an absolute climate catastrophe, a catastrophe for all species including our own. And so that’s the direction of travel. Now, that direction of travel does not have to continue, but the current trend line tells us that all we are doing so far is giving rhetoric and optimism and greenwash, and not driving the levels of change that are necessary to stay within the 1.5-to-2-degree framing of the Paris Agreement.
And:
And I have to be honest and say that my judgment, my best guess as someone who’s worked on this for years, is that we are going to fail. We’re going to go to three or four degrees centigrade of warming, and we’re going to put up with — well, we won’t put up with — we’ll have to live through, or die from, all of the repercussions that that will have. That is a terrible prospect, and one that I think we have to try everything we can to avoid.
But the message of hope, if there’s any thread of hope in this, is that it is a choice to fail. We have so far repeatedly — I’m going to say “we”; what I mean is effectively our leaders, politically, academically, in the journalistic community, across the board, those people that are framing this debate — have chosen actively to fail for three decades. And when they have breakfast with their own children, I hope they are thinking about what they have deliberately, what we have deliberately, imposed upon their future.
