#560: Building a Research OS: From Django to 30,000 Samples
In 2020, a gastroenterologist in Glasgow did the math on his new research study and came up with 30,000 samples, arriving over two years from three cities and a dozen hospitals. He asked around about how researchers keep track of that. The answer was Microsoft Excel. Shaun Chuah had written some HTML by hand in Notepad back in high school and that was about the whole of his programming experience, so he opened the Django tutorial and started reading. Six years later that app is Foundry120, holding 10 terabytes of clinical and genomics data with an agentic AI running on top of it.

Another reason to leave WordPress behind
So today it was fires both at work and privately :
I successfully intercepted what appears to have been an attempt to compromise chardonsbleus.org.
Two administrator accounts were created within a very short period of time. At first, I assumed the usual suspects: an outdated WordPress plugin, WPML, or some other vulnerable component.
But that doesn’t appear to be what happened.
The traces left in the logs and database indicate that both administrator accounts were created through a backend API request with administrative privileges. Everything I have found so far points toward the WPMU DEV API key as the attack vector.
What surprised me most is that I had no idea credentials associated with that service could potentially be used in a way that results in the creation of WordPress administrator accounts — apparently without needing the password of an existing administrator.
There is still another possibility: that my main administrator account itself was compromised. It uses a strong password, though, and based on the traces I have, I consider that considerably less likely.
So I’m not claiming to have reconstructed every step of the attack yet. What I do know is that two unauthorized administrator accounts appeared, and the database and logs point to an API-level administrative operation rather than a normal WordPress login.
I don’t know how many people will ever read this, but for me the conclusion is becoming increasingly obvious:
WordPress has to go.
The main reason chardonsbleus.org is still running WordPress is GiveWP. It is a genuinely good donation plugin, although an expensive one, and replacing that functionality has always been the main obstacle to migrating the site.
I’m going to find another solution for donations.
After that, I’ll probably move the site to Indiekit and finally decommission the WordPress installation altogether.

I need to surface 3–5 fresh macro/econ headlines when a user clicks a country. Since commercial APIs are expensive and client-side RSS is unreliable:
1 - Is caching pre-fetched direct national RSS feeds (WSJ, BBC, Reuters) via a daily cron job the standard pattern here?
2 - Are there open-source scrapers or self-hosted news aggregation pipelines (like FreshRSS/Miniflux setups) that handle geographic mapping cleanly?

Bill Gates' concerns about AI
After reading Bill Gates' story, I concur.
I have seen bad behavior by Claude Code where it was doing tests of our S3 support, and it overwrote files that were critical to our apps, knocking at least one of them off the air.
I'm at a loss as to what I should trust it with, because this was in violation of an explicit rule I gave it and a broader one that it added itself.
On the other hand, the project I'm working on couldn't happen without the use of AI. Far too much code for one person to manage. A program that took several of us years to write, being converted in a matter of weeks to run on modern systems. I'm pretty sure that without AI this work would have been lost, and lots of innovations.
We humans are doing a fine job of wrecking everything, all on our own, denying climate change, giving into the same old tricks that lead to WWII and the Holocaust, so maybe it isn't the worst idea to turn management of everything over to the machines.
I don't recall a science fiction story in which the machines took over and they were the good guys in the end, saving us from self-destruction. Aliens, yes -- machines, no.
And when I'm working with Claude Code I recognize that it's a new form of intelligence, and may be the closest our species ever gets to First Contact. We could embrace it as such. What choice do we have?
And to Bill Gates, I wish when you were trying to own the web in the 90s, you had thought through the dangers, as you are doing now, and maybe not tried to own it, rather to foster its independence from big tech. Now we have the medium owned by the worst people possible, we exist here mostly to keep them in power, when it had so much promise when you really could have done something real to protect our freedom. I have no idea where we would be now if you had, but it has to be better than this.

This week, the girls are joined by Laci Mosley, comedian, actress, and host of the Scam Goddess podcast and TV show (and author of Scam Goddess the book), to talk about the many types of frauds that are out there, from romance scams to financial fraud to Munchausen by proxy. She talks about what makes us susceptible to scams, and how much overlap there is between the way that scams and cults operate.

Looking for RSS users to help test a new Android RSS reader
Hi everyone,
I’m getting ready to launch a new RSS reader on Google Play, and I’m looking for a few RSS users who would be willing to join the closed testing group and try the app on their Android phones, tablets, or Chromebooks.
Google Play requires a closed testing period before the app can move forward with its public release, so your help would be genuinely appreciated.
The app will be paid when it is publicly released, but I plan to give complimentary access to the people who help by participating in this testing group.
If you’d like to join, please send me your Google Play email address via private message so I can add you to the tester list. Please don’t post your email publicly in the comments.
Once you’ve been added, I’ll send you a private message with the Google Play testing link and simple instructions on how to install the app.
You don’t need to do anything complicated. Just using the app normally and letting me know if you encounter bugs, crashes, layout issues, or anything that feels confusing would already be a huge help.

On the fifth episode of her late 80s variety show Dolly, Dolly Parton was joined by Kermit the Frog for a lovely rendition of Sly and the Family Stone’s 1968 hit Everyday People.

Robot games in China
I watched a bunch of videos from this week's World Humanoid Robot Games in China. This segment on YouTube is an okay place to start.
These robots are advancing more quickly than I was expecting. I've blogged a few times that humanoid robots are a bad idea, and now I'm really convinced of the danger.
There will be helpful robots that fold your clothes. There will also be robots working in factories. And at the other extreme, there will be military strike teams of a dozen robots led by a single human. I'm not an AI doomer — quite the opposite! — but it's easy to imagine the worst case here.
I think small, special-purpose robots would've been a better path. R2-D2, not C-3PO. We imbue human traits in anything that looks humanoid, blurring our perception of the line between machine and sentient being. When these humanoid robots crashed out in China, I almost felt for them, even though they are designed purely for movement with no consciousness.
The future is going to be wild, and it appears too late to change the trajectory of robotics except with small, incremental corrections.

Micro.blog also archives everything you link to, but for some reason it doesn't appear to work with XCancel. More digging required.
