The press is freaking out about Democratic Socialist candidates winning elections all over the country.
They can relax, because the government of the United States thrives on different points of view, and thus -- compromise.
The Democrats can have any combination of points of view, as long as they play by the rules of democracy. In fact it would be an even better demo if their points of view were more diverse.
The coalition the press talks about are the people who vote for America. This is true -- if they vote for the Republicans this time around, they're voting for the party that is dismantling America. Spin it all you want, but we can see what's happening.
And btw, the assumption that the voters are too dumb to figure this out -- I think that's incorrect. But as long as you talk to them as if they are that dumb, what choice do they have. Put out an idea of what America is and if it's right, and reaches both the heart and the mind they will get behind it. Everyone knows we're in a dangerous spot, with secret police roaming the cities, ready to crack down on dissent, but so far they haven't dared to go that far. People feel that. And that's what you must run on.
The best ad I've ever seen on this theme was for the Bernie Sanders campaign for the 2016 nomination. I'm reduced to tears every time I watch that ad, and I wasn't a Sanders supporter in 2016.

I used to use Bluesky to write my early morning posts when I'm using an iPad or a computer that can't access my editor for my main blog.
Before that I used Twitter.
But I should be using RSS.chat.
Esp when I hit the character limit on Bluesky, which happens every time. It's not very likely I'll write something that can be expressed fully in 300 chars.
This morning I reminded myself that my new casual writing platform is right here.
This, btw, is 459 chars.

In fact nothing could be more reaffirming of democracy than having a wide range of new reps in Congress from different political viewpoints.
They can all work together and in doing so, give us another shot at the form of government we all believe in.

I’ve been working on a side project that solves a problem I kept running into: keeping X accounts active with fresh content without spending hours writing posts every day.
It takes a news source or RSS feed and turns the content into natural-sounding X posts. You can either let it post automatically or review everything first. It only uses the official X API.

🔗 Tesla wants to build a $10B solar factory in Texas
The Tesla playbook is the Amazon playbook … pitch as many states as you can against each other … the ongoing nail in the coffin of the UNITED States.
Tesla has applied for tax incentives to partially offset the cost, saying that it is exploring other sites “across multiple U.S. states.” The factory would create about 9,700 full-time jobs, Tesla said.

Without incentives, Tesla’s accountants estimated that the property tax liability for the project would be about $1.1 billion over 37 years.
That’s roughly $30 million per year folks … heaven knows that Tesla and the Muskrat need all the help they can get … I mean just to employ 9,700 people at minimum wage is going to cost them an order of magnitude more than that .. and its not as if they have access to an army of robots capable of doing that work.

Auto-saving drafts
Both the web and Mac versions of Micro.blog were updated today with auto-saving drafts. If you start writing a longer post, Micro.blog will quietly save a draft to the server. This makes it less likely to lose any text if something goes wrong. For manually saved drafts, Micro.blog will still keep track of each version if you need to roll back.

- Add 3-5 feeds. Try a mix of an RSS feed, a YouTube channel, and if you can, an email newsletter (email newsletter testing might take more time but greatly appreciated. Its okay to send the feedback form whenever).
- Browse to the homepage, the subscriptions list and the articles list pages.
- Click through and read a couple of articles. If the article is just a summary, load the full content.
- Save an article to read later and then check its in the saved articles list.
- Try the search feature. Try searching by for a particular word or phrase. Try searching for a general topic or area. Click through from the suggestions or load the search results page.
- Fill out the feedback form I’ve sent you.
Feedback Submission
To get the gift card: submit the feedback form with your answers. A quick screen recording (even 60 seconds on your phone) of you using the app is optional but greatly appreciated.

Deduping 64 AI feeds so I could count how many outlets cover the same story — four layers, one needed a language model
I run an AI news reader (https://helucino.com — mine, free, no account needed to read) that pulls 64 feeds every 15 minutes. Reading them was easy. The thing I wanted was harder: rank stories by how many separate outlets are covering them. Five news websites independently publishing the same story is definitely a signal that the news is important — and to get it you must first know that four articles are one story. So dedupe was the problem I picked.
Four layers, cheapest first:
- Canonical URL hashing — kills syndication and tracking-param variants.
- Exact normalized-title match — free, catches straight reprints.
- Title-token similarity — Jaccard + containment, but gated on shared named entities. Without that gate "Meta open-sources X" merges with "OpenAI open-sources X", which is definitely a wrong answer.
- Embeddings to shortlist, then a language model to decide — asked in both directions and these must agree, because one-directional prompting says yes far too easily.
The output is a
+Nbadge per row, and a sort order. Ranked orders purely by that count; Top applies the same count with an 18-hour half-life so recency still matters. A false merge is much worse than a missed one here — merging two stories hides one of them and inflates the other's count — which is why layer 4 has to agree with itself before it will collapse anything, and why complete linkage is checked both ways before two groups join.Current reality check: 63 of 64 feeds green. The one that isn't is Hacker News, which is a bit on the nose. Genuinely curious how others handle publishers that block feed readers — mirror, back off, or drop them?

The Art of the Copyist
Lovely short video about artist Jas Knight, who is a participant in the Met Museum’s Copyist Program:
The Copyist Program offers time and space for artists to develop their own interpretation of an artwork through intimate study in the Museum’s galleries. Copyists have created reinterpretations of original artworks in The Met collection since 1872.
Here’s Knight from the video, in which he is copying Diego Velázquez’s Juan de Pareja:
Almost every artist was a copyist up until the 20th century because as a painter you would go through certain exercises to learn how to paint. You haven’t begun to see a painting until you’ve copied it.
And I especially liked this bit:
Velázquez’s brain is on that canvas. So we’re encountering a person’s brain that doesn’t exist anymore when we’re looking at a painting by them. I’m literally interacting with Velázquez.
In a piece about Harold Fisk’s Mississippi meander maps, I wrote about art as a time machine:
It takes some imagination, but standing before a painting by Hilma af Klint, a sculpture by Bernini, or a cave painting in Chauvet, France draws you back in time in a powerful way: you know you’re standing precisely where those artists stood hundreds or even thousands of years ago, laying paint to surface or chisel to stone. Even experiencing art through prints or photographs leads the mind to consider all the cultural, political, technological, and economic things that were happening when the work was produced. Art is a doorway to past worlds.

Tesla might be finally doing something good again. TechCrunch reports:
Tesla intends to build a massive solar panel factory 45 minutes southwest of Houston, according to documents filed with the state of Texas. [...] The factory would create about 9,700 full-time jobs, Tesla said.
Solar is so obvious for Texas. If this helps get the costs down, good things will happen. At least I like it better than their plan to build robots.

What the E.U. is doing is stealing the last thing humans have — creation — and demanding it be bundled with substantiation, effectively giving AI the credit. That the human gave AI the text to proofread — or even the prompt to generate writing — doesn’t matter to the bureaucrats.

Is anyone else surprised that Gemini has 1 billion users? I've only met one person who uses it instead of ChatGPT or Claude. But maybe I don't know enough Android users. People go along with whatever defaults they're given... Browser, maps, AI.
