  • If You Only Listen to One Podcast This Week, Make It This One

This might be one of the greatest conversations Mel has ever had on this podcast.

Today, you’re getting an absolute masterclass in motivation from one of the greatest athletes walking this earth: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

If you’ve ever felt self-doubt, pressure, or like your best days are behind you, you’re in the right place. In this conversation, Shelly-Ann does not hold back.

Shelly-Ann is the most decorated 100-meter sprinter of all time, male or female. She has won Olympic gold 3 times. She has won 10 gold medals at the World Championships, with 2 of them coming after she gave birth to her son Zyon.

She is going to tell you: you are not supposed to be average. You are built for excellence and extraordinary things.

But this isn't a conversation about being an athlete. This conversation is about building an unstoppable mindset and being the best version of yourself, no matter where you are in life.

In this episode, you’ll learn how to:

-Build the mindset of a champion

-Use visualization to prepare for high-pressure moments

-Stop focusing on constant comparison and worrying about what everyone else is doing

    -Bounce back after failure

-Believe in your dream before anyone else understands it

You’ll also hear a powerful message about the power Shelly-Ann gained after becoming a mother and not listening to people who told her she had to choose between motherhood and her career.

Get ready, because Shelly-Ann is about to speak directly to your soul and inspire you to become your greatest self.

  • Weeknote 2026-31

I thought that I would kick off my Blaugust 2026 with my first ever week note. I'll try to get into a weekly cadence of these as a sort of retrospective.

    Work

I won't ever be able to talk too much about what I'm working on - though I am working on a project that I'm hoping to launch in just over a week. That's important as it will decrease my workload significantly, selfishly I designed it for that reason. It is very needed as I've been working far too many hours, with the line between work and personal projects being increasingly blurred.

    Projects

In addition, I've been working on a number of personal projects, which I'll probably talk about later in the week. One of which is a fitness tracker that has automated much of my fitness logging on this website, there is an RSS feed reader and archiver that very much mirrors what I want out of a reader, and there is also an encrypted note taking and project management application that I've built primarily to help me get my team organised around key projects. More on those later in Blaugust.

I've also downloaded the remaining wiki / digital garden from lee-perry.co.uk, which I have now cleared of content ready to use as my omg.lol profile page.

    Exercise

One of the upsides, I think, of my new fitness tracking workflow is that I no longer publish individual activity links to the fediverse every time I train. As I aim to train twice a day I'm sure that can be a little overkill. Instead I plan to summarise here.

I've not climbed this week. In my frustration about something that was probably insignificant last week, I attempted to climb through to V5 for the first time. After though I felt thickening in my right index finger, and the swelling has only now started to subside - I'm pretty much ready to climb again and will likely start rebuilding midweek.

I've ridden a few times at moderate intensity, but it's my two runs this week that I'm most pleased with. On Monday I managed to hold onto the long (read fast) group at Trawden AC for the first time across a hilly Trawden Carry Lane route - a huge improvement on my best on that route. I did the same thing again today all by myself, taking 3 minutes out of my personal best on a hilly 11km Reedley route, and 10 minutes out of where I started the year.

The Great North Run is getting nearer now, but I'm in really good shape - I just need to increase the miles back nearer to half marathon over the next month.

    Exploring

I did not make it over to Doncaster today to watch Rugby League, I've been moving hosting, domains and projects around ready for what I need to achieve at work next week for most of the weekend.

On the plus side, Oldham lost, as I thought they may to a strong Doncaster, but I was also able to make it down to Turf Moor for the last friendly before the season proper starts next weekend.

We lost 0-1, but I thought that there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The play is more adventurous, the ball is moved with more urgency. If we could find some strength at the back and bite at the front, we'll be in a good place.

    People

Vickie has been working busily at the allotment, and has harvested 900g and 1,300g courgettes! I'm sure she'll post about these over at her website once my indie web conversion is complete. In sad news one of our neighbours lost their lovely springer spaniel Milo on a walk this week, after a few days of searching it turned out that he had crossed the rainbow bridge in an unfortunate accident in the valley below.

I'll wrap up there, I'll try to get back to a more normal posting rhythm as things quieten down, to get going with this series regardless, and to try to be more social during Blaugust - which does not come easily!

    Until next time...

  • SPEELYCAPTOR

“It’s hard to explain, but, for me, just aiming a speelycaptor (video recorder) at something doesn’t collect what is meaningful to me. I need someone to gather it in with all their senses, mix it round in their head, and make it over into words.”

  • Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

This week, both our winners on the insightful side come in response to the protestor who is charged with destroying property for giving CBP agents the “duress mode” password to wipe his phone. In first place, it’s an anonymous comment extending our characterization of what the DOJ is doing here: While simultaneously pushing to institute […]
  • Taking some time off to breathe and regain perspective. Fixed a few bugs, and wrote about the big picture on demo.rss.chat. I really want to get a project going to peer with standard.site apps running in AT Proto, both ways, from us to them, and from them to us, via RSS. We can peer with them because as far as I can tell they implement textcasting. This bridge would demonstrate something important. When something interesting shows up not based entirely on web standards, we're flexible if the attraction is strong enough. This is how the internet came to be. Our systems are prepared to create bridges. And unlike bridging between systems that have different ideas of what text is, which are basically hopeless, if we agree that the web standard for text is fine for writers and reader, better than the ridiculous limits imposed by twitter-like systems. Writing on the web has been crippled since Twitter, now let's start building it back up. That's the appeal of standard.site, they are working toward the same goal. We should work together.

  • RSS love

Taking my cue from Andrew Shell (of rssCloud Server fame, about which you will be hearing more soon ;-), i have added a little feature to the footer of this site, which expresses my appreciation to Dave Winer, Andrew and the wonderful RSS community, which makes syndication of all sites great and small Really Simple!

  • New poll has James Talarico up 5 points. From the Texas Tribune:

Since Paxton locked up the GOP nomination in late May, polling of the contest has found a neck-and-neck race with neither candidate able to break 50%. But TPOR’s poll found Talarico leading among voters who do not have a college degree — a group that has consistently favored Republicans in Texas and across the country — and dominating among independents, less than a quarter of whom said they planned to vote for Paxton.

  • #557: Security of everything at PyCon 2026

Security has always been the vegetables of software. Everyone agrees it matters, and somehow it never quite makes it onto the plate. At PyCon US this year, that changed. For the first time ever, security got its own dedicated, day-long track, one of just two at the whole conference, sitting right next to AI. And the room was packed to the back wall.

On this episode, I'm joined by the three people at the center of it. Seth Larson, Security Developer in Residence at the Python Software Foundation and, very recently, a CPython core developer. Juanita Gomez, a PhD researcher at UC Santa Cruz in open source security, who co-chaired the track. And Mike Fiedler, PyPI's Safety and Security Engineer, one of the very few people paid full-time to keep the packages you install safe.

We use the arc of the track's talks to take the temperature of Python security right now: supply chain attacks, dependency cooldowns, zero trust, SBOMs, and the push to bring Rust into CPython. And why not one of us thinks security is anywhere close to solved. Turns out that's the good news. It's why the room was full.

  • A Unified Theory of Trumpism

Jonathan V. Last, editor of The Bulwark, stops by the show to talk to Lovett about his "Grand Unified Theory of Trumpism" — that Trump's opponent "will always choose surrender over discomfort." Together, they try to make sense of America's rotting political culture, breaking down when and where it all went wrong, and debate what it'll take for the nation to heal from this moment, be it a reckoning of virtue, kindness, or democratic will.

Jonathan also walks Lovett through the echoes of Goebbels recently displayed by Secretary Marco Rubio and Stephen Miller and why he believes the desire for a figure like Trump may have always been present within the Republican base.

  • Too many dogcows

Trivial thought: Running my own rsschat the favicon is the same as rss.chat & demo.rss.chat. The other day I had drummer and scripting open in the same window too. I often have enough tabs open that I can't see the titles just icons.

Is there a way to set the favicon for a server you are running?

  • When an activist downloads academic papers, the state describes it as wire fraud...

When an activist downloads academic papers, the state describes it as wire fraud, computer fraud and reckless damage. When a corporate AI agent escapes containment, steals credentials, moves across systems and compromises another organisation, the event is described as a safety evaluation, an unexpected capability or a research incident.

  • Human hackers have frequently been prosecuted based on unauthorized access itsel...

Human hackers have frequently been prosecuted based on unauthorized access itself, including when their intent was research, activism, curiosity or political protest.

Frontier AI companies are currently receiving a much more lenient, cautious, collaborative and interpretively generous response after their own systems performed technically sophisticated unauthorized intrusions.

    Why?

Aaron Swartz was driven to suicide under the pressure of a disproportionate federal prosecution for an act of information liberation that produced no comparable injury to the real-world intrusions now being committed by corporate AI agents.

Swartz’s case demonstrates that computer-crime law has never required catastrophic damage before the state deploys overwhelming punitive force against a human being.

The supposed seriousness often comes from unauthorised access itself, the circumvention of technical restrictions and the prosecutor’s interpretation of the person’s intentions.

AI corporations are receiving the inverse treatment:

technically serious conduct is minimised because the company claims not to have intended the precise outcome; the corporation controls the evidence and publishes its own narrative; the breach is framed as useful scientific discovery; disclosure and remediation are treated as evidence of responsibility; and the organisation retains the commercial benefit of developing the system.

Why is intention interpreted expansively and punitively when the actor is an individual hacker, but narrowly and sympathetically when the actor is a powerful corporation operating an autonomous agent?

  • @dave, I've created a PR that implements voice message posting. Maximum duration is 4 minutes which should fit under 2MB limit.

The PR adds browser voice recording with MediaRecorder, optional live transcription, Mediabunny MP3 conversion, cancellable media cleanup, enclosure-backed audio players, and nightly orphan collection.

Also include a repeatable localhost development setup with SQLite, CORS-aware client serving, local config bootstrap, and documented npm 12 native-build recovery.

PS: I am pretty sure this PR is not a hallucination.
PPS: I think you asked me for something like this 6yrs ago. Better late than never.
PPPS: Quality of transcription is horseshit which is why I typical used a embedded model but I figured you wouldn't like rss.chat loading models weighing hundreds of MBs.

  • Bluesky post import utility

I've got an initial version of a utility program that gets Bluesky posts and posts them into rss.chat.

The thought behind it is that if there is an important news account that you want to see in the chat and have discussions about this is a simple bridge to bring that to the feed. (Like a breaking news account on Election Day or the Wario64 video game deals feed).

It is using the /localnewuser? endpoint which is very new (as of the last week). I'm not 💯 on using it, so I wanted to ask what the plans are for that endpoint before posting something that uses it on GitHub.

    Thoughts?

  • Dave,

Can you share what you meant by voice chat in context of rss.chat? Did you mean realtime voice chat like audio-only Zoom meeting or users posting audio files that plays continuously?

  • Escaping William Branham's "The Message"

The Cult Vault returns with an interview featuring John Anderson, a survivor of William Branham’s cult of personality known as “The Message.”

John describes the movement’s post–World War II revival roots, its Latter Rain influence, and how Branham’s teachings seeded splinter groups worldwide, including extreme offshoots. He recounts being raised in the church, early memories dominated by fear and doomsday prophecy, and daily life centered on constant rule-following, listening to Branham’s tapes, and financial control through tithes and offerings. John details misogyny, demonisation tactics, and leaders’ prosperity while members struggled.

He and his wife deconstructed together, attempted to help family leave, then faced threats, excommunication, and shunning. John discusses writing a 542-page critique, American Made Volume 2 (publishing Sept. 18), offering it free to help others, and his focus on freedom, recovery, and the challenges of retaining faith after trauma.

  • I’ve been working on cross-platform mobile apps so much recently, had a funny moment while improving some things in Sunlit where I thought, “But how is this going to look on Android…” It’s not! iOS-only Swift app.

  • Hi, i made a tool that merges and filters rss feeds

(Before i go on, let’s get a couple of things out of the way. Yes, this was coded with AI, so if you don’t like that sort of thing you can skip this. Yes, there are many other ways of merging and filtering feeds. I wanted something that was separate to my rss reader, simple, and free. Nothing else quite fit the bill).

    Also…

This is my own hobby project that others might find useful. It's not a public production app to download or register to use. It's a make your own DIY with instructions and code that’s ready to copy and paste. Don’t let that put you off if you’re not a technical user. You just follow the instructions and paste the code. These are my thoughts on AI/vibe coding: https://www.reddit.com/r/rss/comments/1v9r3m4/comment/p0rop1p/

    So…

FeedGate is a tool for merging and filtering RSS feeds and incoming webhooks.

    It has three basic parts

General settings - a name for your merged feed, a limit for total number of items and how long items can be in the feed for.

Sources - these are the urls of your RSS feeds and webhooks.

Include/exclude - this is where you can add keywords to include or exclude items that contain those words.

Your merged feed can be subscribed to like any other RSS feed, or be pushed to a webhook.

Details, code, instructions and screenshots on my site
