May Peace Prevail on Earth
Here are some photos I’ve taken during my time in Tokyo so far. I’ve been posting new stuff more or less daily to Instagram. Somehow I’m already about halfway through my stay.

Somehow these images both capture and don’t even come close to capturing my experience here. That kinda place, I guess.

MAGA Built The Censorship Machine It Spent Years Falsely Accusing Democrats Of Building
This is not a unique or new observation, but so many MAGA attacks on others are projection, claiming that Democrats were doing the very things that MAGA always knew they would do if they were in charge. We’ve certainly spent plenty of time talking about Donald Trump’s myriad and non-stop attacks on free speech, and […] -

Why is Pure Blog so ugly?
Someone emailed recently to tell me that they like the idea of Pure Blog, but they thought the admin interface was "really ugly" so they can't use it. Fair enough - beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but I don't think that was a fair evaluation of Pure Blog's admin UI.
When I built Pure Blog, I wanted it to be different from the rest of the crowd. The whole point of it was to have just enough features, and no fluff. So to me a more brutalist/utilitarian UI made sense.
The likes of Grav, WordPress, Ghost, and Bludit all have similar interfaces. White and grey with blues, purples, and greens. Rounded corners etc. All very iOS-ish. All very...safe. I wanted Pure Blog to stand out from the crowd and have its own identity, and honestly, I'm thrilled with the results.
Pssst. If you haven't tried Pure Blog yet, check out the demo site.
But what I like may not be what you like, which is why I built Pure Blog to be very customisable from the start. You can change the fonts from mono, to sans, or serif with the click of a button, or you can change the look of the entire UI if you know some CSS.
And this is what I said to the person who emailed me saying it was ugly. But they came back with...
Great. Do you have any examples?
I didn't! So I decided to create some examples and show them here so you can see just how customisable Pure Blog really is. I know other CMSs can customise their UI too, but unlike them, Pure Blog needs no plugins, hacks, or bullshit. This can all be done with standard Pure Blog right out of the box.
So here are some examples of the Pure Blog admin UI where all I've added is custom CSS within settings.
Cupertino
How about bringing a macOS / iOS vibe to your Pure Blog site?
Purely Ghost
Or maybe you like the super clean lines of the Ghost UI? Well, you can have something similar to that too if you like:
Pure Press
Are you a WordPress purist who really wants to be as faithful as possible to their design? Well guess what - you can have that too!
Windows 4 lyfe
Maybe you're a lover of anything Bill Gates touches. If so, a Windows theme might be more your thing.
How about Windows 11?
Or Windows XP?
Or if you're really old, Windows 95
Terminal FTW
Maybe all this GUI stuff isn't your jam? Do you yearn for the days of yore when the interface to a computer was terminal-only with a monochrome CRT monitor?
Well, Pure Blog can do that too:
Green – the connoisseur's terminal.
Or orange, the truly old-school terminal.
Your imagination is the limit
I think these screenshots show what Pure Blog is capable of. Your imagination really is the limit. So just because you think the default look of Pure Blog is ugly, don't fret - you can easily change it to be whatever you want it to be.
If you're interested in grabbing any of these themes for your Pure Blog installation, all the CSS is available over on the docs site.

Whoa, the Lion Nebula!

NASA’s JWST recently snapped this image of the Lion Nebula (NGC 2392).
Massive stars undergo supernova explosions at the end of their lives, but these kinds of events are few and far in between. Most of the universe’s stars have lower masses, like the one belonging to NGC 2392. When a lower-mass star can no longer sustain itself with nuclear reactions in its core, the star becomes unstable and pulsates, losing its mass by shedding its outer layers, which then turn into shells of gas and dust called a planetary nebula. (Stars at this life stage are responsible for producing much of the universe’s observable dust.) The star’s radiation drives the ejected material away, leaving behind the very hot stellar core, also known as a white dwarf.
In the Lion Nebula’s case, the death of the oxygen-rich central star has left behind a white dwarf that is “cooking” everything from the inside and producing a bubble of ionized gas as it does. The gas bubble, which forms the lion’s face, is expanding over time and destroying dust that is in its path. Understanding why the swept-up gas has a complex structure of rings and shells, a common feature in planetary nebulae, is an ongoing endeavor.
The mane of the lion is the interior of a dust shell that is being illuminated by the white dwarf at the center. The tufts of hair, which look like cometary tails of material, are compact clumps of dust that have survived the stellar core’s radiation and protect the material that lies behind them.
Webb’s imagery “freezes” this planetary nebula in time, though the star’s death, and its tumultuous effects, go on. NGC 2392 will continue to undergo changes as its gas and dust migrate away from the stellar core. Astronomers estimate the lion will eventually disperse in approximately 10,000 years — a relatively short period in astronomical terms.
The Hubble imaged the nebula in 2000 in visible light, but the JWST’s infrared cameras are higher resolution and better at capturing the gas and dust details.
Discovered by William Herschel in 1787 and “visible with a small telescope”, the nebula was called the Eskimo Nebula until recently — NASA discontinued using that name in 2020 because “certain cosmic nicknames are not only insensitive, but can be actively harmful”. (via robin sloan)

WyrmRSS 0.27: self-hosted RSS reader, now with a mobile UI and a live demo
I posted WyrmRSS here a while back. Since then it's gained a proper mobile UI (installable as a PWA) and there's now a live demo you can try without installing anything: https://demo.wyrmrss.com
For anyone new: WyrmRSS is a completely free and open-source (GPL-3.0) RSS/Atom reader I've been building for 5 months. You can self-host it (Docker/Kubernetes) and use it from desktop and phone, or run the native desktop app (macOS/Windows/Linux), which keeps everything in a local SQLite database with no server needed.
The demo is mostly read-only to prevent abuse and resets daily, but you can read, bookmark and archive posts.
Reading-wise, things I think it does well:
- YouTube channels as feeds, with an inline player
- Per-feed display modes: River (home feed), Feed only, and Radar for quiet feeds you check occasionally
- Folders, per-feed filters, Read Later, Archive
- Feed discovery from a site or YouTube channel URL, OPML import/export
- Webhooks for new posts (Discord, Slack, custom)
Keyboard shortcuts and a mark-as-read delay are next on the list, thanks to feedback from r/selfhosted.
Built with LLM assistance, mostly on the frontend as it's not my strongest area. The backend is pretty much hand-written. It's a hobby project: I'm a software engineer by day, and I design, review and run everything myself daily. The logo was made by a tattoo artist from Brazil, credited in the README.
Repo: https://github.com/kryoseu/WyrmRSS. Feedback welcome, especially from people coming from Miniflux/FreshRSS.
There's also some good discussion in the r/selfhosted thread (here), including the feature requests mentioned above.

Felicia Rosario - Larry Ray’s Coercive Tactics, Life After the Sarah Lawrence Cult, and Becoming an Expert Witness
This week, the girls are joined again by Felicia Rosario, survivor of the cult at Sarah Lawrence, led by a man named Larry Ray. Today Felicia, who previously came on the show along with fellow survivor Daniel Levin, explains how Larry drew her in over time by love bombing her, winning over her social circle first, and using his genuinely powerful connections to give himself a mystique and an air of authority.
Felicia shares more about Larry’s crimes and abuse, what made her decide to finally finally decide to leave, and the life she’s built for herself since—as an expert witness testifying about coercion. She explains some of the factors one can point to in court to establish that someone has been under coercive control. They also discuss the Cornell case and how common it is for people to behave unexpectedly when they’ve just experienced something traumatic.

Voter Suppression Is Happening in the South. This Organizer Fights It.
More To The Story: One of the defining issues heading into this year’s midterms is how redistricting has rapidly reshaped electoral maps across the country. When the Supreme Court gutted much of the Voting Rights Act earlier this year, a number of states redrew maps eliminating majority-Black districts, weakening Black political power potentially for years to come. But what does this shift feel like for someone working on the ground to expand voting access for Black communities when the promise of equal representation itself is under assault? Ask LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter Fund, a group that’s been working to increase voter participation within minority communities in the rural South, especially where turnout is low. On this week’s More To The Story, Brown talks with host Al Letson about her winding path into politics, her fight against ongoing voter suppression efforts in the South, and why it’s important to mobilize Black voters now more than ever.

Japanese photographer and artist Tomoko Sawada works primarily in self-portraiture. For her first project, she visited ID photo booths to take hundreds of photos of herself, dressed, posed, and presented differently. Eugenie Shin of Tokyo Weekender calls that 1998 project, ID 400, “a dizzying grid of strangers who are all actually the same woman”.

For subsequent projects, Sawada says she’s continued to “examine the relationship between outer appearance and inner self through different concepts”.
