  • Irony: Catholic Bishops Tell FL Officials To Respect Its Religious Liberty To Not Accept Religious Exemptions For Vaccines

The country is continuing to reel from multiple infectious disease outbreaks in America, even as childhood vaccination rates continue to fall. Measles, cyclosporiasis, whooping cough: you don’t actually need me to go on. With RFK Jr. using his position as Secretary of HHS to further muddy the waters on vaccines and their safety, some states […]
  • Could Orbán lead Hungary again?

For 16 years, Viktor Orbán exerted an iron grip on Hungarian politics and society. Now it’s being dismantled. Has Hungary finally turned a page on the Orbán era, or could he make one final return?  It’s only a few days before Péter Magyar’s government, which succeeded Orbán, learns whether his anti-corruption reforms have done enough to persuade the European Commission to release €10.4 billion of frozen funds to help the country recover after the Covid pandemic. The money was withheld over breaches of EU law under Orbán, who suffered a landslide defeat at the polls in April. Host Anne McElvoy talks to János Bóka, who now leads Orbán’s Fidesz party from the opposition benches in the Hungarian Parliament. He was minister for European affairs in the previous government and is seen as a relatively moderate voice tasked with rebuilding a party reeling from defeat. Does he want to cast off an ousted strongman’s shadow – might Orban still be seeking to find a way back? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • FeedLand Rivers for WordPress

I've released a WordPress plugin that shows a FeedLand river on a page or post: feedland-rivers.

Drop the shortcode `[feedland-rivers]' onto a page, point it at your FeedLand username in the settings, and it fetches the river JSON server-side and renders it in an isolated iframe. No FeedLand front-end scripts, no third-party fonts or stylesheets beyond an optional favicon lookup. Here is an example.

You can also show more than one river on a site by overriding the username, category or server per shortcode instance, e.g. '[feedland-rivers username="alice" category="tech"]'.

  • Familias Horribles: Alicia Markowitz on No Contact and Finding Freedom from Family Abuse

Family is supposed to be your safe place—but what happens when home is the original high-control group? In this episode, Alicia Markowitz, co-host of the Spanish-language podcast Familias Horribles, joins us to talk about growing up in an abusive family system, becoming the scapegoat, and slowly realizing that the “family rules” were really just coercion, control, gaslighting, triangulation, and a whole lot of “because I said so.”

Alicia gets refreshingly real about trauma, religious guilt, emotional and physical abuse, fawning, zero contact, and the terrifying business of choosing yourself after a lifetime of being told you’re the problem. We talk about how family cults mirror other high-control groups, how to recognize the red flags, why boundaries don’t magically work on narcissists, and how therapy, trusted people, good information, and a little hard-won self-compassion can help you rebuild the person you had to hide to survive.

Follow Alicia on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok @estoydemilado, and Familias Horribles on YouTube and Instagram.

Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of childhood abuse, physical violence, psychological and emotional abuse, narcissistic and controlling parents, family estrangement and zero contact, gaslighting, scapegoating, panic attacks, depression, trauma, and suicidal fear.

  • MI6 Spymaster: Was Israel Serious About Regime Change in Iran? (Ft. Ronen Bergman & Mark Mazzetti)

How did a Holocaust-denying, hardline former president of Iran become the centerpiece of an Israeli plan to topple the regime in Tehran? Former head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove and co-host John Raine sit down with New York Times investigative journalists Mark Mazzetti and Ronen Bergman to detail the high-stakes intelligence mission that preceded Operation Epic Fury. They explain how Israel’s Mossad groomed former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad into an intelligence asset, and how Mossad director David Barnea Ahmadinejad to the White House in February 2026 as part of a plan for rapid regime change in Iran. They also discuss the plan’s collapse within days of the decapitation strikes, why the plan to use Kurdish forces as a ground proxy was a non-starter, how the political fallout from the war may forever change US-Israel relations, and the electoral implications for both US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this fall. • Stop Wasting Your Time: How to Deal With People Who Won’t Change & What to Do Instead

There’s someone in your life you wish would change.

You’ve pushed, reminded, and given advice. You’ve had the same conversation over and over.

And somehow, you’re still stuck in the same frustrating cycle of fighting, nagging, lecturing, and hoping they’ll finally do something differently.

    There is a better way.

In today’s conversation, Mel sits down with renowned behavioral scientist and award-winning NYU professor Dr. Dolly Chugh to unpack the surprising science of why people resist change and what really works.

You’re going to walk away with some of the most powerful, research-backed tools Dr. Chugh teaches at NYU – tools that will change how you see difficult people, frustrating relationships, and your own ability to influence how others behave.

    You’ll learn:

-The 3 things that really do help when someone you love won’t change

-The simple question to ask before giving advice – so it doesn’t backfire

-The 4-option question that reveals what someone needs from you in a difficult moment

-The relationship tool that keeps small problems from turning into 10-out-of-10 fights

-How to tell when “helping” someone is keeping them stuck

-The 2 “bodyguards” in your brain that explain why you know better but still don’t do better

-Why your brain can fight change even when you desperately want it

-The surprising role “unlearning” plays in changing a habit or behavior

If you’re exhausted from trying to change someone you love, this conversation will give you a different way forward – starting today – that feels lighter, more hopeful, and extremely doable.

Your relationships will never be the same. And neither will you.

In 2020, a gastroenterologist in Glasgow did the math on his new research study and came up with 30,000 samples, arriving over two years from three cities and a dozen hospitals. He asked around about how researchers keep track of that. The answer was Microsoft Excel. Shaun Chuah had written some HTML by hand in Notepad back in high school and that was about the whole of his programming experience, so he opened the Django tutorial and started reading. Six years later that app is Foundry120, holding 10 terabytes of clinical and genomics data with an agentic AI running on top of it.

  • Another reason to leave WordPress behind

So today it was fires both at work and privately :

I successfully intercepted what appears to have been an attempt to compromise chardonsbleus.org.

Two administrator accounts were created within a very short period of time. At first, I assumed the usual suspects: an outdated WordPress plugin, WPML, or some other vulnerable component.

But that doesn’t appear to be what happened.

The traces left in the logs and database indicate that both administrator accounts were created through a backend API request with administrative privileges. Everything I have found so far points toward the WPMU DEV API key as the attack vector.

What surprised me most is that I had no idea credentials associated with that service could potentially be used in a way that results in the creation of WordPress administrator accounts — apparently without needing the password of an existing administrator.

There is still another possibility: that my main administrator account itself was compromised. It uses a strong password, though, and based on the traces I have, I consider that considerably less likely.

So I’m not claiming to have reconstructed every step of the attack yet. What I do know is that two unauthorized administrator accounts appeared, and the database and logs point to an API-level administrative operation rather than a normal WordPress login.

I don’t know how many people will ever read this, but for me the conclusion is becoming increasingly obvious:

    WordPress has to go.

The main reason chardonsbleus.org is still running WordPress is GiveWP. It is a genuinely good donation plugin, although an expensive one, and replacing that functionality has always been the main obstacle to migrating the site.

I’m going to find another solution for donations.

After that, I’ll probably move the site to Indiekit and finally decommission the WordPress installation altogether.

I need to surface 3–5 fresh macro/econ headlines when a user clicks a country. Since commercial APIs are expensive and client-side RSS is unreliable:
1 - Is caching pre-fetched direct national RSS feeds (WSJ, BBC, Reuters) via a daily cron job the standard pattern here?
