The Moral Unseriousness of Centrist & Conservative Pundits
Jamelle Bouie almost never misses. In this video that’s just shy of 10 minutes long, he chastises American political & cultural pundits for their lack of moral seriousness w/r/t their focus on “wokeness” instead of the real harms being done by the authoritarian Trump regime. (And he worked in a reference to Jonathan Frakes saying no.)
I bring this up because this is just a great example of a phenomenon I’ve been struck by over the past year. Which is that, in the midst of a government that is systematically dismantling Americans’ rights, that is systematically dismantling the post-World War II world order, that is systematically tearing apart the social safety net, that is trying to exert nearly totalitarian control over large parts of American life, which is constructing concentration camps and throwing migrants into them, which has killed two Americans on the street and is looking to suppress as much as possible dissent, even bringing the full force of the federal government against people it wrongly accuses of wrongdoing — as we observe all of this, so many of our pundits and professional commentators are still obsessed with people they got mad at in 2020 and 2021.
They are obsessed with fighting the specter of wokeness — whatever that misappropriation of African American vernacular means. They look at overzealous college students, overbearing HR departments, or colleagues who put pronouns in their signatures as tantamount to a Cultural Revolution. And meanwhile, as the Secretary of Defense quite literally purges Black people from the highest reaches of the military, it doesn’t look like anything to them.
They don’t even comment on it. The Republican Party has turned pretty openly against liberal democracy. Republican lawmakers are confirming election deniers to lifetime appointments. They’re nominating election deniers to high-ranking offices like governor. And meanwhile, pundits, reporters, the press — they’re obsessed with “Hey, did Francesca Hong once say that she thought we should cancel Thanksgiving?”
I would note that the free speech absolutists are awfully quiet these days too.
Bouie was reacting specifically to this David Brooks piece and this one from from Ross Douthat (with the amazing titular admission that he can’t tell the good guys from the bad guys these days)1 and possibly this one too. Michael Hobbes has been talking about this on Bluesky as well:
There were excesses in 2020 but they were mostly low-stakes efforts by well-intentioned people to address real injustices.
The excesses of the right during the same era were far more harmful. The reckoning we need now is about how elites lost sight of that.

Centrists convinced themselves annoying leftists on twitter were an equivalent threat to Jan 6 insurrectionists. They wildly inflated the threat of left-wing authoritarianism while ignoring how it was taking hold on the right.
Meanwhile, the right never meant any of it. They moaned about “cancellation” for a decade but embarked on mass firings as soon as they took power. They pretended to care about “free speech restrictions” and “educational indoctrination” while embarking on them every chance they got.
The excesses of the Woke 1 era mostly amount to cringe public statements, harmless vocabulary updates and loss of prestige for public figures.
The backlash to Woke 1, on the other hand, is imprisoning dissidents, dismantling public education and eroding democracy. That’s what needs reckoning.

Supersonic Trebuchet
Ok so when you woke up this morning, you probably didn’t expect to watch a 20-minute video about a trebuchet — but to be fair, I didn’t either. But Tom Stanton’s build of a fully mechanical trebuchet that propels a tiny plastic pellet faster than the speed of sound (complete with tiny sonic boom) is genuinely fascinating to watch.
He starts with a basic plan, but as he builds & tests, there are all sorts of problems (weight, strength) that he needs to overcome. The final product is impressive, but it’s the process that’s most interesting to me. What a gift these sorts of videos are…you could sometimes find process-heavy shows on PBS (like How to Create a Junk Food) when I was a kid, but if I’d had access to stuff like the supersonic trebuchet video (and all those Lego engineering videos), I’d have probably wanted to grow up to be an engineer.

WordPress as the text of the web
I wrote something candid on Twitter last week and felt it was worth repeating here. It is a bit judgmental, and for that I apologize. But I couldn't keep the meaning without all the words.
- Shaking my head thinking can't the people of WordPress see that what it needs is a simple normal writing interface, and a great API for competitive apps. That's the big opportunity you all can't see for some reason.
- Once you have that, you can now move WordPress into position as the text of the web. And it has the market all to itself because the other text apps of the web place ridiculous constraints on text.
- They got this idea in their heads that the web would be better if they eliminated all the writers features. Maybe that's because they weren't writers. ;-)
I know this is a story I repeat often. The opportunity is still there. All kinds of bad products and companies are camped out in this space, taking advantage of users' trust but they feel they have no choice but to use the bad products. On the web, we'd like to keep improving what the web can do with text, so even though it's always slightly more difficult to use an open ecosystem, it is possible to get most of the functionality and all of the freedom, and new features that the lock-in guys will never give you. -

Make America America Again
The press is freaking out about Democratic Socialist candidates winning elections all over the country.
They can relax, because the government of the United States thrives on different points of view, and thus -- compromise.
The Democrats can have any combination of points of view, as long as they play by the rules of democracy. In fact it would be an even better demo if their points of view were more diverse.
The coalition the press talks about are the people who vote for America. This is true -- if they vote for the Republicans this time around, they're voting for the party that is dismantling America. Spin it all you want, but we can see what's happening.
And btw, the assumption that the voters are too dumb to figure this out -- I think that's incorrect. But as long as you talk to them as if they are that dumb, what choice do they have. Put out an idea of what America is and if it's right, and reaches both the heart and the mind they will get behind it. Everyone knows we're in a dangerous spot, with secret police roaming the cities, ready to crack down on dissent, but so far they haven't dared to go that far. People feel that. And that's what you must run on.
The best ad I've ever seen on this theme was for the Bernie Sanders campaign for the 2016 nomination. I'm reduced to tears every time I watch that ad, and I wasn't a Sanders supporter in 2016.

Before that I used Twitter.
But I should be using RSS.chat.
Esp when I hit the character limit on Bluesky, which happens every time. It's not very likely I'll write something that can be expressed fully in 300 chars.
This morning I reminded myself that my new casual writing platform is right here.

It takes a news source or RSS feed and turns the content into natural-sounding X posts. You can either let it post automatically or review everything first. It only uses the official X API.

🔗 Tesla wants to build a $10B solar factory in Texas
The Tesla playbook is the Amazon playbook … pitch as many states as you can against each other … the ongoing nail in the coffin of the UNITED States.
Tesla has applied for tax incentives to partially offset the cost, saying that it is exploring other sites “across multiple U.S. states.” The factory would create about 9,700 full-time jobs, Tesla said.

Without incentives, Tesla’s accountants estimated that the property tax liability for the project would be about $1.1 billion over 37 years.
That’s roughly $30 million per year folks … heaven knows that Tesla and the Muskrat need all the help they can get … I mean just to employ 9,700 people at minimum wage is going to cost them an order of magnitude more than that .. and its not as if they have access to an army of robots capable of doing that work.

Auto-saving drafts
Both the web and Mac versions of Micro.blog were updated today with auto-saving drafts. If you start writing a longer post, Micro.blog will quietly save a draft to the server. This makes it less likely to lose any text if something goes wrong. For manually saved drafts, Micro.blog will still keep track of each version if you need to roll back.

Hey folks,
I’ve been working away at improving everything about Foragd; bugs, quirks, layout and usage. I’d like to gather some feedback from more folks and have a reward for participants.
The Ask
Looking for 5 testers to spend about 15-20 minutes trying it out and filling in a short feedback form. In exchange, You’ll get gift card valued at $10 USD (redeemable for gift cards from Amazon US and other US retailers through GiftBit).
You can perform the testing in a web browser on a phone, tablet, or desktop. Any OS, any browser. If you can test on multiple devices, that would be great but not required!
I’ll send a link with the feedback form to be eligible for the gift card, to the first five folks who DM me about this.
Testing Steps
- Sign up for the free trial (no card/payment details required): https://foragd.app/signup
- Add 3-5 feeds. Try a mix of an RSS feed, a YouTube channel, and if you can, an email newsletter (email newsletter testing might take more time but greatly appreciated. Its okay to send the feedback form whenever).
- Browse to the homepage, the subscriptions list and the articles list pages.
- Click through and read a couple of articles. If the article is just a summary, load the full content.
- Save an article to read later and then check its in the saved articles list.
- Try the search feature. Try searching by for a particular word or phrase. Try searching for a general topic or area. Click through from the suggestions or load the search results page.
- Fill out the feedback form I’ve sent you.
Feedback Submission
To get the gift card: submit the feedback form with your answers. A quick screen recording (even 60 seconds on your phone) of you using the app is optional but greatly appreciated.
There are no right or wrong answers for the feedback questions. However, consistent low-effort, vague and/or short answers will not be eligible for the gift card.
