The press is freaking out about Democratic Socialist candidates winning elections all over the country.
They can relax, because the government of the United States thrives on different points of view, and thus -- compromise.
The Democrats can have any combination of points of view, as long as they play by the rules of democracy.
In fact nothing could be more reaffirming of democracy than having a wide range of new reps in Congress from different political viewpoints.
They can all work together and in doing so, give us another shot at the form of government we all believe in.

Wondering how long items in your feed persists here?

I'm looking into how to document privacy for an RSS-based, federated service, and I'd love to see how others have handled it.
Specifically: what happens to a post once it leaves your server — syndicated over RSS, cached, crossposted to another instance, or shown by third-party readers? I'm based in Europe, so I'm especially keen on examples that aren't written purely from a US angle. Not looking for legal advice — mostly how people have actually thought about it.
A couple of decisions I ended up making, as discussion starters (and because I'd genuinely like to hear if others went a different way):
Erasure vs. federation. Once a post has been crossposted to another server, my take is that actual removal over there is up to that server (caches, archives) — we request the takedown, but can't guarantee it. How do you word this without either over-promising or scaring people off?
Traces after deletion. When an account is deleted, its old public address returns a permanent "account withdrawn" (HTTP 410) — which still reveals that a handle once existed. I chose to spell that out rather than pretend deletion is total. Does anyone handle this differently?

I have spent a few days scattered over three weeks supervising a new version of frontier which took almost a decade to develop originally for Mac in 80s and 90s for node.js and electron. Without Claude I’m pretty sure that was never going to happen. I’m paying $100 a month for that.

Do you ever sweat while computing? I don’t have the survey data to prove it, but I think people, when they compute, expend a lot of energy, enough energy to sweat, and that they sweat more than they replenish with water.

Do you ever feel that there are times when your computing setup is “just right”? Like, in the Goldilocks sense. Everything is just perfect, and you don't want it to change, because the number of bugs and annoyances are down to a minimum…somehow? I'm currently not there, but have been there a few days this year.

rss.voice status
I did a full rewrite from scratch Sunday to run on Cloudflare or standalone using celld.

De afgelopen dagen denk ik weer na hoe ik online alles in balans breng. Mijn blog, interessante links, online aanwezigheid, CreativeNotes, comments, maar tegelijk de professionele kant van die online aanwezigheid. Hoe hou ik dat in evenwicht. Ik zou dat na 26 jaar bloggen toch wel moeten weten. Niets is minder waar. Het blijft zoeken. De huidige site op frankmeeuwsen.com is in elk geval niet voldoende. Dat is al een jaar een lelijke placeholder voor wat er zou moeten komen. Daar moet ik eens werk van maken. Maar er moet ook een manuscript af. Gelukkig heb ik nog een paar weken redelijk wat werkvrije tijd.

Because it's short it it won't have to be upgraded to standard.site class, it can go through the analog of coach (the current limits of Bluesky).

Connecting RSS and AT Proto
We're going to make this happen.
I think it's really important for us to connect with developers who make writing tools for AT Proto. We should be part of the same community, I feel that very strongly, so I am seeking new ways to make that happen via RSS.
I noticed they had a feed in Leaflet, one of the editors, so I created an account entered a few posts, and then looked to see what was there. I then wrote the developer privately, to ask if he would welcome a review, and he did. I made the time this morning to put together the review.

In the other direction, I've been asking everyone I know who could possibly help, how to go in the other direction, have my RSS feed show up in AT Proto as whatever it is that makes new posts from people in that world.
People keep telling me it's not like RSS, and I can't imagine how it could be anything other than RSS. So the answer was, until yesterday -- no -- you can't do it or we don't know how to do it. Except I asked the question again, on micro.blog and Manton says they have the feature. Of course he does. Manton covers every freaking protocol ever invented.

I rolled out basic cross-posting from Micro.blog to RSS.chat this week. Here's a screenshot of what the menu looks like. Still have some improvements I can make later.

Update -- I didn't like the idea of turning Drummer into a programming environment so instead I asked Claude to give its version of Frontier a user interface. Parts of it are starting to work one hour later. Using Electron, Concord (the outliner I keep reusing) and all the other stuff. If it all works I will be able to run Frontier on my desktop. Also the ODB is a SQL database.

I'm working on posting from Micro.blog to RSS.chat today, using the API. For completeness, I think support for the Micropub posting API or even MetaWeblog would be good. Then some existing clients could post to RSS.chat with minimal or no changes.

WebSub support for RSS.chat
Previously we were only able to notify via rssCloud.
Now we also support WebSub because there are also a fair number of feed readers that only use WebSub.
We're using Andrew Shell's rsscloud.io as our WebSub hub, as we have for a long time with rssCloud.
Andrew please help us figure out if this is working correctly.
The source is in the repo, along with a worknote.

Hey Dave! I was talking to a user, and he's having issues with feedland (probably feedland.com) not subscribing to his rssCloud via https when his cloud specified port 443. I know you fixed this on feedland.social back in May, but it doesn't look like it made it to GitHub, npm, or feedland.com. I suggested he just use my rssCloud server instead, but I'm wondering if you have plans to get this update pushed out? Maybe at the same time as the support for rssCloud in OPML files?

Too many dogcows
Trivial thought: Running my own rsschat the favicon is the same as rss.chat & demo.rss.chat. The other day I had drummer and scripting open in the same window too. I often have enough tabs open that I can't see the titles just icons.
Is there a way to set the favicon for a server you are running?

@dave, I've created a PR that implements voice message posting. Maximum duration is 4 minutes which should fit under 2MB limit.
The PR adds browser voice recording with MediaRecorder, optional live transcription, Mediabunny MP3 conversion, cancellable media cleanup, enclosure-backed audio players, and nightly orphan collection.
Also include a repeatable localhost development setup with SQLite, CORS-aware client serving, local config bootstrap, and documented npm 12 native-build recovery.
PS: I am pretty sure this PR is not a hallucination.
PPS: I think you asked me for something like this 6yrs ago. Better late than never.
PPPS: Quality of transcription is horseshit which is why I typical used a embedded model but I figured you wouldn't like rss.chat loading models weighing hundreds of MBs. -

Bluesky post import utility
I've got an initial version of a utility program that gets Bluesky posts and posts them into rss.chat.
The thought behind it is that if there is an important news account that you want to see in the chat and have discussions about this is a simple bridge to bring that to the feed. (Like a breaking news account on Election Day or the Wario64 video game deals feed).
It is using the /localnewuser? endpoint which is very new (as of the last week). I'm not 💯 on using it, so I wanted to ask what the plans are for that endpoint before posting something that uses it on GitHub.

Can you share what you meant by voice chat in context of rss.chat? Did you mean realtime voice chat like audio-only Zoom meeting or users posting audio files that plays continuously?
