The beauty of RSS in podcasting is that you only need to publish your episodes in one place. Until recently, to do a video podcast, you had to publish video episodes outside your RSS feed (on YouTube or by uploading them manually to Spotify). But now, using HLS and the podcast:alternateEnclosure tag, you can publish video to your podcast’s RSS feed. Audio-only podcast apps will continue to play the audio version, but podcast apps that support HLS will be able to offer consumers the video podcast experience. It’s the same technology behind most of the video you already watch on the internet (Netflix, YouTube, etc all use it). Instead of one giant file, HLS breaks your video into small segments (usually 2 to 10 seconds each) and publishes a manifest file (.m3u8) that lists them. The player reads the manifest, and streams your media segment by segment. The benefits for the consumer are: You can start watching immediately. Quality adjusts to your connection. On Wi-Fi, HLS might upgrade the resolution to 1080p; on a poor 3G connection, the player drops to a lower bitrate. RSS technically supported video before this. You could put an MP4 in your enclosure tag. But that meant asking every listener to download a multi-gigabyte file before they could watch anything, What is alternateEnclosure tag? podcast:alternateEnclosure is a tag from the podcast namespace. It lets you offer additional versions of media in you podcast’s RSS feed for an episode alongside the standard audio enclosure. Why does this matter for the open podcast ecosystem? HLS in RSS is open by design: there’s no proprietary API, which means any hosting company can publish it, and any podcast app can support it. From a podcaster’s perspective, it’s a simple solution. Instead of having to upload your video episodes to multiple places, you just upload your media to one place. Your RSS feed remains the single source of truth for your podcast (which is the way it should be!). Built a no-tracking Canadian news reader this summer, would love some brutally honest feedback
Been doing web dev as my day job for a few years now, and this summer I finally built something for myself instead of clients.
I got tired of scrolling through five different news sites every morning, half of which needed a cookie popup dismissed and were mixing in a ton of US headlines I didn't ask for. So I built North Wire — pulls from CBC, CTV, Global News, Financial Post, BBC, that kind of source list. No account, no cookies, no tracking. Just headlines.
You can add it straight to your home screen from your phone's browser — no App Store needed, nothing to download. It's in beta right now, and there's a feedback form built right into it — genuinely want to know what's broken or annoying before I keep building on it.
Full disclosure: I run a small web design shop in Chilliwack, this was a side project to keep my skills sharp and scratch my own itch. Not trying to sell anyone anything, just sharing since I figured other people might be as tired of the algorithm-chasing headlines as I am.

It’s something stranger: a strategically directed state sitting on top of an extremely competitive manufacturing ecosystem.
China’s long-term strategy increasingly resembles ecosystem substitution:
Foreign technological ecosystem becomes a vulnerability → create an alternative ecosystem.
Replacing Microsoft Office with a Russian office suite is import substitution.
Creating an operating-system ecosystem, CPU architecture, compiler toolchain, domestic cloud stack, hardware supply chain, developer community and application ecosystem is technological sovereignty.
China is attempting the latter.

Introducing the Micro.blog PDS
I've started rolling out an AT Protocol PDS — personal data server — for new Micro.blog users. In the Bluesky world, a PDS is what stores your posts, follows, photos, and other data from apps. In the same way that creating an account on Micro.blog automatically gives you a fediverse handle, I wanted people to be able to create a Micro.blog account and have everything they needed to sign into Bluesky.
If you're already using Bluesky, there aren't currently any advantages to using Micro.blog's PDS. We run the PDS reference implementation, with various new UI bits in the Micro.blog frontend for managing your account. You won't even see the PDS option if you already have Bluesky cross-posting configured for your blog.
I've updated the account page so that both fediverse and atmosphere settings feel at home together:
I'm inspired by all the developer activity in the atmosphere. Everything from blogging apps like Leaflet and Pckt, to photo sharing, even puzzles. All of these apps store data on the PDS and require no changes to work with Micro.blog.
Domain names have always been a fundamental part of Micro.blog. When new users opt to use Micro.blog's PDS, their domain name becomes their Bluesky handle. They can then immediately sign into Bluesky with their own domain name without creating an account on Bluesky. It feels a little like using IndieAuth to sign in with your blog.
It's early and I'm not entirely sure where all of this is going. But ever since Bluesky added support for an external PDS, it has felt like a missing piece in Micro.blog hosting. I'm happy to fill that in and see what happens.

“An Absolute Climate Catastrophe”

So there is lots that you will hear — lots of rhetoric, lots of good words, lots of optimism about the future. But given we’ve known about this subject and apparently been working on it for 30 years, the trend line tells us that we are heading towards three to four degrees centigrade of warming across this century: an absolute climate catastrophe, a catastrophe for all species including our own. And so that’s the direction of travel. Now, that direction of travel does not have to continue, but the current trend line tells us that all we are doing so far is giving rhetoric and optimism and greenwash, and not driving the levels of change that are necessary to stay within the 1.5-to-2-degree framing of the Paris Agreement.
And:
And I have to be honest and say that my judgment, my best guess as someone who’s worked on this for years, is that we are going to fail. We’re going to go to three or four degrees centigrade of warming, and we’re going to put up with — well, we won’t put up with — we’ll have to live through, or die from, all of the repercussions that that will have. That is a terrible prospect, and one that I think we have to try everything we can to avoid.
But the message of hope, if there’s any thread of hope in this, is that it is a choice to fail. We have so far repeatedly — I’m going to say “we”; what I mean is effectively our leaders, politically, academically, in the journalistic community, across the board, those people that are framing this debate — have chosen actively to fail for three decades. And when they have breakfast with their own children, I hope they are thinking about what they have deliberately, what we have deliberately, imposed upon their future.

I don't like the Claude watermark announcement. For images, yes, watermarks are important. "A picture is worth a thousand words" and there's too much of a chance for misinformation. For text, it's more complicated, as essays will often be 95% human, with AI-assisted edits.

Apparently the nightly email didn't go out last night. The problem was an error when it tried to read the Linkblog entries for the day. I've seen reports that these errors happen when you try to read the Links tab on scripting.com. The error shouldn't kill the email sending, it should just omit the linkblog entries, and publish the rest. These kinds of problems always pop up at the worst time. Luckily yesterday wasn't a big news day, and you can read about it on the blog. -

I have spent a few days scattered over three weeks supervising a new version of frontier which took almost a decade to develop originally for Mac in 80s and 90s for node.js and electron. Without Claude I’m pretty sure that was never going to happen. I’m paying $100 a month for that.

When Google Reader was still around, I was subscribed to an rss feed and I lost what that feed was.
I'm pretty sure the name was "The Internet [SOMETHING]", which is stupid vague. It was a feed that every so often would have a post that was photos from any time between the 70's and 90's (estimating here). Just life. Sometimes some Adult 18+ photos. But like a random stereotypical dude from the 70's smoking a Marlboro. Some women out for a girls night.
Maybe someone here will see this and be able to reconnect me with that. I never pursued looking for the website publishing the feed. Didn't think about it until after I had lost it.
