OnlyMarms: Funding Science Research on OnlyFans
This is an extremely 2026 story (derogatory): because of the Trump regime’s assualt on scientific funding, a group of scientists who has been studying marmot populations in Colorado since 1962 turned to OnlyFans to fund their research this year.
In June, Daniel Blumstein, a biologist, sat in a field in Gothic, Colo., waiting to see a marmot. The rodent was elusive, leaving his thoughts to wander.
He lamented a lack of funding for his work amid federal cuts to scientific research. Then he alighted on the television show “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” and that’s when the epiphany came.
Perhaps the show’s plot, about a single mother who, unable to find conventional work, turns to the adult-content site OnlyFans to support herself, could be applied to marmots and research funding.
Back at his lab, Dr. Blumstein pitched the idea (with a wholesome spin) to his colleagues, who offered mixed feedback. But then one of his graduate students suggested naming the profile OnlyMarms.

OnlyFans is a subscription platform that allows users to pay creators to see exclusive photos and videos. The platform has become popular with adult-only content creators, but it hosts others too, including musicians, athletes and celebrities — and now marmots.
“We’re trying this out of frustration with an extremely challenging funding environment,” Blumstein said. “If we’re lucky, it can help raise money for supplies and some expenses. But unless we are very lucky, it won’t replace the federal funding that has driven discovery in the US since the 1950s.”

Broken Vibecoded Dreams on r/RSS
We all know the vibecoding wave is crazy, but exactly how crazy?
I gathered data from Reddit archives, for this subreddit only. 496 applications have been published on r/RSS since January 2020.
The pace has increased a lot: from 3 a month in 2020 to 25 new applications a month this year. The busiest month is July 2026 (not even over when I ran the analysis yesterday), with 36 applications already.

To be clear, I'm not criticizing vibecoders. I built an RSS app myself (see the irony here 😂 ), hugin.news, I love it and I use it everyday. And as I just checked, I'm quite proud it's the only one that can connect directly to your claude/chatGPT with MCP to make your news digest.

I made some very personal reflections with this data :
1 ) How much RSS apps do we need ? I would say about 20 are enough to cover every use case. So 95% of apps won't have a meaningful number of users.
And let's be honest the apps people use are mostly Big Tech. If you want to have visibility in the app business you need a very high marketing budget and a very good marketing strategy.2) If you code on your free time, like evenings week ends holidays and so, you will NEVER make money out of it. Just don't believe in it and don't put efforts or money in marketing.
You can still do it for pleasure, or to learn vibecoding for something you may need at work one day.
But don't expect to you find users, even for free, people just don't care about sloppy vibecoded apps, do it for fun if you enjoy it.3) If you are a full-time vibecoder, you have better chance of building an original, usefull, well designed product, but the odds of making a salary out of it are extremely slim.
In any case you can look the data I shared to see if your app already exists or if you have a genuine new idea.
You'll probably earn a lot more with a real job at a well-funded company, but maybe companies will start valuing vibecoding skills in the future, who knows.4) There is kind of a huge industry that wants you to believe you can vibecode your way to money : AI providers (Cursor, Claude...), cloud services (AWS, Google cloud...), ads providers (Google ads...) and plenty of other layers of the stack. I think they're the ones actually making money by taking ours and wasting our time for that.

I have an rss.chat UI added to my naive Elixir/Phoenix-built news reader (which started out with the API from feedbin). I only have a couple of unanswered questions:
1. rss.chat feed permalinks are based on the screenname. What happens if a user wants to change her handle?
2. the API indicates that an item can have an enclosure, but I don’t see how to post an item with an enclosure either vis the frontend or via the API.
3. Are there any ideas about how to grow a federation of rss.chat servers? (This question may expose my naivite concerning RSS’s inbound and outbound possibilities.)

My hacking continues. I managed to create a zero-length media object at demo.rss.chat/media/23 (this is what happens when you forget the @ in the curl command). I suspect that eventually, endpoints for /deletemedia and /updatemedia will be needed.

new rss.chat backend
Over the weekend, I sat down with my old buddy Claude and made a new backend for rss.chat written with Go.
The big differences are that it splits the database into more task relevant pieces, and ports it to sqlite rather than mysql. (its just a file!).
With this new foundation I'm able to do some hacking on pieces that I'm interested in, like websockets (I'm super impressed with Bluesky's ATProtocol "Jetstream" service), and getting a native phone interface up and running.

When the walls came down
Yesterday's Scripting News was one of the most news-full days in a long time, maybe going back to the rollout of RSS 2.0 in September 2002. If you look at what's there, a post about re-opening the Frontier object database format would be considered the top item on any other day, but it's the last of the untitled posts for the day.
At the top of the page, a surprise that Matthias Pfefferle at Automattic had built a substantial (and unforeseen!) bridge between WordPress and RSS.chat. It builds on the new features. This may turn out to be the moment RSS started being accepted as a social web protocol by the insiders, alongside ActivityPub and AT Proto.
Look at what we've done. I stress we. Matthias didn't need to tell us about what he did until it was done. That my friends is how the web works, that's what I've been trying to show you, and now it has been shown. In a way the clock has gone back to the world before Twitter when events like this happened pretty routinely.
Small pieces loosely joined and all parts replaceable. The web in a sentence. That's what you're buying into when you put your work on the web.
Anyway, now we've got half of the big picture working. Also yesterday, before I knew what Matthias had been cooking up, I wrote a piece about how I see the network evolving. I predict, if this bootstrap works, we will come back here in a year and say things like "If he only knew." But that's how it goes, you tell your story and leave a record of it, and then later you can go back and see what it looked like as it happened, not as you remember it.
I'm proud that I have a record of September 2002 for you all to scroll through. That was when we knew that RSS was going everywhere. NYT support got us the full support of the news industry, and they worked fast in part because it is really simple. :-)
And almost unnoticed, something even I seem to forget -- this is also a new launch for RSS. We're using old reliable RSS 2.0 as specified in 2003, even using one of the elements that had never had been much used. Claude suggested it, I never would have thought of it, a perfect fit. What people may realize but don't realize the importance of, that RSS is extensible. I've accumulated all the extensions I use in my software since the early teens in the source namespace. And that's where the new stuff went. Guess what folks, RSS got an upgrade. First time in a long time. Perhaps you didn't think that was possible.
I played with a lot of names while RSS.chat was in development but decided the name had to be RSS.something. It deserves a lot more love than it has gotten from the tech world. I don't want to hide it, I want it to get a victory parade like the one the Knicks got on Broadway after winning the championship. It's an incredible gift that all that came together the way it did. People think they understand how it happened, but they only understand the BigCo version of how they buried RSS and were proud of it. Well I'm here to tell you that didn't happen. It's still here to pick up the pieces of what's left of the social web, after the VCs got through with it. We're picking up where we left off in 2006.
Because of Claude, we are able to work very fast now as long as we know what we're doing. I'm doing some projects on the side with Claude that are bearing fruit amazingly fast, because we have a very clear idea of what we hope to do. The tools keep getting better, and in this period, the art of creating software has blasted into outer space. It's as if the best transport we had was a horse and buggy and now all of a sudden we have everything we have today, bikes, cars, planes, rocket ships. The challenge is how high do you dare to set your ambition. It seems, based on experience, it doesn't matter how high it is as long as you know where you want to go.
Journalism only sees the threat. This change is on the level of curing cancer. We may have thought it might be possible someday to do what we're doing now, so amazing that as you watch Claude make it happen you get goosebumps and can't help but laugh out loud.
I thought my career was winding down, but now it feels like it's just getting started.
Reminded of a great quote in Godfather III, Michael Corleone says: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in."

Here to report that I fairly easily installed an RSS.chat server on my webhost at RSS.storian.org (whitelisted to me only for now). I wrote a first post and immediately subscribed to my feed in my installation of Feedland (Zuiker tab in my News Product). Will stop here for the night, satisfied.
