Given the good weather there are quite a lot of butterflies around this week. This looks like quite an old one that has been in the wars, black faded and very ragged. I wonder what tales it could tell. My butterfly by month page is building nicely.

Simpler instance-starting
We just converted both rss.chat and demo.rss.chat to use a different storage system, instead of using Amazon S3 to store the feeds, we're storing them in our database. So instead of there being two domains for on system, now there's only one. Cuts out one of the most complicated parts of setting up a new instance.
So if this works, it will show up on the blogroll on Scripting News, which is watching the old url, which should redirect to the new one.

The biggest install hurdle is gone. Feeds can now live in the database, served by the server itself — no S3, no AWS account
A new config setting,
flFeedsInDatabase, turns it on. When it's true, the server stores its RSS feeds and its subscription list in a newfilestable and serves them from its own domain — your feed is athttps://yourserver/users/yourname/rss.xml, the subscription list athttps://yourserver/data/subs.opml, and the four feed-location settings from Monday's note aren't needed at all. When it's false (the built-in default), nothing changes — S3 publishing works exactly as before.Turning it on for an existing server is one restart: at startup the server backfills — rebuilds every user's feed, every comments feed, and the everyone feed from the database, so the files are all there before the first request. Both of our servers, rss.chat and demo.rss.chat, made the switch today.
One thing the flag can't do for you: subscribers still point at your old S3 addresses. The fix is a redirect where the old feed domain is served. Ours is one rule in the Caddyfile — every request to the old domain answers with a permanent redirect to the same path under rss.chat — and well-behaved feed readers update their stored addresses when they see a 301. Details in install.md, which now describes the database-mode install; S3 remains documented in config.md for those who want it.

A Year of AquaFit and Six Months of Swimming Lessons
(This is an uncorrected draft of a blog post going out tomorrow.)
A friend's wife suggested, about 10 years now, and I consider AquaFit for physical activity. That was during my running phase, so I didn't outride reject it if maybe keep it as an option along with yoga.
Fast-forward a decade, and a move across the country later, I started living in a neighbourhood that had a YMCA being built, one that would be a few years behind schedule. On July 16th, 2025, the second day it was open, I took my first class. We were all facing towards the shallow end, and I, not knowing too much about where to to, took the shallow end. At 6'3", I stuck out of the water a bit, but had a great workout, a gentle and low-impact aerobic workout that had elements of strengthening. Perfect! After the next few classes, we switched to facing the sides (perpecticular to either the shallow or deep ends). Since then, I am in the middle, with just enough water to cover my torso with the ability to touch the bottom of my feed. A month in, I noticed the impact already: Stronger arms and an earlier rise than I normally would to make the 8 AM classes. I'm now part of the 8 AM crew's group chat, and we have coffee every now and then and see each other on the street. It's one of 3 neighbourhood groups I'm part of, the other being the neighbourhood association and a friend group that grew out of that.
Over the summer, in my hometown of Courtenay, I took to swimming in the river, telling my dad that I'm leaving my phone at home, and that I'd be back in an hour, and would just dry off on the way back. That experience was so good, but my swimming so obviously degraded that, in the new year, I started taking swimming lessons. I decided to take "intermediate" lessons since I figured I knew how to swim already, but needed bolstering of my technique. What I didn't know that I needed was a lot of work on breathing and endurance. Since then, I'm now in my third "semester" of that lessons group. I'm close to feeling confident in the front crawl (commonly known as freestyle), somewhat confident that I know what I'm doing with the back crawl (backstroke), and have the beginnings of a breast stroke (with a long way to go).
That gave me the idea to do training in basketball, my first love in sports. More on that if I end up going through with that.
What I hope by talking about it is that others will think of doing it, too. I tried to tell as many men I know that they should come to my Yoga for Stiff Men class, which was very similar to the Yoga4StiffPeople™ (originally Yoga4StiffGuys) that I love so much when I lived in Vancouver. It seems to have taken off quite a bit since I left (good!) and is not much of a thing here in Toronto. (It was later re-branded as Stretch + Strength without changing the routine because not enough men were signing up. I did what I could!) I have heard from my 8 AM AquaFit crew that they're considering lessons (yes!) and that one is taking the "free lessons" the lifeguards teach when they're bored. Amazing!
If you did something in your youth, and you miss doing it, and you want to be better at it so that you can enjoy it again, look up whether there's lessons. The amount of shame in my swimming lessons group is very low. Everybody has to introduce themselves at the start of lessons and why they're there, and there's always two people who want the same thing. One woman in my current group said the same thing I did, that she enjoyed swimming but was gassed after a lap or two. Everybody else had different reasons, but everybody else had at least one other person in the group who had the same goals.

A thought that occurs to me a lot while living alone in a small apartment: I'm the only person responsible for myself. It comes up when I hear about men in straight cohabitating couples do less than half of the housework. I'm not here to deny that. I'm here to say that people who live alone do all of the housework. I do all of the cooking, all of the dishes, all of the tidying up, all of the cleaning of surfaces, all of the laundry, and most of the maintenance.
(I did hire a handyman for 4 hours to do some random things like help remove my stuck ceiling light covers [which I had to finally accept was a two-person operation], install a light switch and switch the direction of the door on my fridge. Money well spent! I do also hire a cleaner to do the surfaces once in a blue moon [before every long trip so that I come back to a clean abode].)
Again, this doesn't deny or erase a truth about how much men do around the house when they live with others. I'll tap that sign again if you bring it up.
I resent some of it, yeah. It's not about having to do it in the first place (OK, yes it is), but doing exactly half of the housework would be a measurable improvement in my life. At least I don't mind it more often than I resent it. After all, it's nice to do something that doesn't require a lot of brain energy. And it's the time I can listen to a podcast or an audiobook (not possible for me while having to think). And whenever I think "I have nobody to bring home, so why am I doing this?" I try to remember that the answer is "I bring myself home almost every day."

We just simplified the way feeds are stored.
The server doesn't have to create a space on S3, we handle it all in our server.
This was the biggest stumbling block in setting up demo.rss.chat -- and I knew what I was doing.

While all the new rss.chat business is going on, the WordPress news site that I started in May is growing at a nice clip. Referrers used to pinpoint where flows like this came from, but they stopped doing that at some point. If you have any clues as to who's pointing to it now, please let me know so I can thank them. And if you know of any sites that are not in the feed list, that do a good job of covering WordPress news, please let me know that too.

A lot more people have tried out rss.chat now that we have a demo site, and they are looking for stuff that isn't there. I wrote a longish post on X this morning explaining. If you want the gist, this is a bootstrap, and rss.chat is primarly a writing surface and a timeline for the people who are using the specific site you're on. It's a writing surface for smallish groups of people, primarily, though I'm pretty sure you could build a massive site meant to serve millions. There will be readers, I'm sure of it, and I hope lots of them and lots of innovative new approaches. But splitting the social network software down the middle, we fulfill the "all parts replaceable" promise, and leave the door open for all kinds of developers to try out new ideas, from bigco devs to independent devs, and a jive programming. We, unlike other artists, welcome newcomers to our craft. We remember when we were new to this stuff and the wonder of being able to create software on our own. Everyone is welcome in rss-land, as long as there's mutual respect.

If you need to “let go” of a feeling or an unwanted thought, try visualizing it. What works often enough for me is taking a thought or feeling, and imagining putting it on a raft that’s floating on a river and watching, in my mind, the river take the raft away. If the raft comes back, so be it. But it usually doesn’t.

You can select text in the timeline now
Until today the text of a post couldn't be selected — to copy a phrase from your own post you had to open the editor, and for someone else's post there was no way at all. Now post text selects like any text on any page: drag across it, copy it, quote it. The one wrinkle worth solving: clicking a long post is how you expand and collapse it, and a drag-select ends with a click — so the click that finishes a selection is ignored, and plain clicks still open and close the post the way they always have. (Theme v0.5.322.)

Naveen it goes the other way, we are not a feed reader, we generate feeds.
This is a writing surface.
But everything goes out via RSS and OPML (still working out some glitchiness there).
From there all kinds of readers can be created that take advantage the structure of posts here.
Every reply to a post is a full peer of the thing it's replying to. When people (devs) see how that works, they'll get 100 ideas for new products. If they don't I will keep going until they do.
We had to do that with podcasting, no one believed it could do what it did. Eventually they did and thus we got a market for podcast clients.
Think of it as a recording studio for text.

You don't find people to follow here. We're just getting started. You do not have to set up an instance. Give a few more months of a bootstrap before all that stuff exists, and the hope is I won't have to provide it. I'll keep building until other developers see that they could be part of this too. Also I don't think all social networks have to behave like Twitter. I feel very strongly about that. They did a lot of things that hurt the web. I want to undo the damage finally get out of the grip of the billionaires.

Aside from the email going to spam signup was delightfully swift. This project is interesting to me because I’ve been craving RSS, Newsnet, text-interfaces, terminals and Lynx. I miss the engagement that text has, and hate the distractions of pop-ups and pictures and suggestions to distract from actual content. Thank you for making a demo I can join and test, I’d love to roll something of my own soon.

Howard we haven't done the docs yet. We're mainly focused now on supporting developers, this is an open source project to seed a new kind of social network, based entirely on open formats and protocols that are widely used on the web. Think of this as playing the role that MacWrite played in bootstrapping software development on the Mac. People needed something to play with to get an idea of how to copy it.
