  • Where are they now? Gerette Buglion on Writing to Reckon (Part 1)

In our next “Where are they now?” catch-up episode, Gerette Buglion is back, and she’s still doing what she does best: helping survivors turn cult experience into something meaningful, grounded, and actually useful. In this conversation with Sarah, she shares how life has evolved since we last spoke, from personal recovery and family life to the gentle, steady growth of Living Cult Free and her writing work with survivors.

A big focus here is Writing to Reckon, her trauma-informed, cult-informed writing program for survivors who want to process coercive control through story. She talks about why writing can be so powerful, how to know when something is ready to share, and why slowing down before publishing can protect people from re-traumatization.

She also offers practical advice for memoir writers and whistleblowers, including keeping old journals and materials which can become a goldmine later, writing privately and imperfectly, and trusting the raw language that comes up. It’s a strong reminder that survivor-led spaces can help rebuild trust, sharpen your bullshit detector, and make meaning out of what happened without flattening it. Stay tuned for Part 2 on Thursday.

Follow Gerette on her website, gerettebuglion.com, or on Facebook or Instagram. Also check out her writing tips at gerettebuglion.com/writingtips and LivingCultFree.com.

Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of cultic abuse, coercive control, trauma recovery, whistleblowing, and re-traumatization.

  • If You Only Listen to One Podcast This Week, Make It This One

This might be one of the greatest conversations Mel has ever had on this podcast.

Today, you’re getting an absolute masterclass in motivation from one of the greatest athletes walking this earth: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

If you’ve ever felt self-doubt, pressure, or like your best days are behind you, you’re in the right place. In this conversation, Shelly-Ann does not hold back.

Shelly-Ann is the most decorated 100-meter sprinter of all time, male or female. She has won Olympic gold 3 times. She has won 10 gold medals at the World Championships, with 2 of them coming after she gave birth to her son Zyon.

She is going to tell you: you are not supposed to be average. You are built for excellence and extraordinary things.

But this isn't a conversation about being an athlete. This conversation is about building an unstoppable mindset and being the best version of yourself, no matter where you are in life.

In this episode, you’ll learn how to:

-Build the mindset of a champion

-Use visualization to prepare for high-pressure moments

-Stop focusing on constant comparison and worrying about what everyone else is doing

    -Bounce back after failure

-Believe in your dream before anyone else understands it

You’ll also hear a powerful message about the power Shelly-Ann gained after becoming a mother and not listening to people who told her she had to choose between motherhood and her career.

Get ready, because Shelly-Ann is about to speak directly to your soul and inspire you to become your greatest self.

  • #557: Security of everything at PyCon 2026

Security has always been the vegetables of software. Everyone agrees it matters, and somehow it never quite makes it onto the plate. At PyCon US this year, that changed. For the first time ever, security got its own dedicated, day-long track, one of just two at the whole conference, sitting right next to AI. And the room was packed to the back wall.

On this episode, I'm joined by the three people at the center of it. Seth Larson, Security Developer in Residence at the Python Software Foundation and, very recently, a CPython core developer. Juanita Gomez, a PhD researcher at UC Santa Cruz in open source security, who co-chaired the track. And Mike Fiedler, PyPI's Safety and Security Engineer, one of the very few people paid full-time to keep the packages you install safe.

We use the arc of the track's talks to take the temperature of Python security right now: supply chain attacks, dependency cooldowns, zero trust, SBOMs, and the push to bring Rust into CPython. And why not one of us thinks security is anywhere close to solved. Turns out that's the good news. It's why the room was full.

  • A Unified Theory of Trumpism

Jonathan V. Last, editor of The Bulwark, stops by the show to talk to Lovett about his "Grand Unified Theory of Trumpism" — that Trump's opponent "will always choose surrender over discomfort." Together, they try to make sense of America's rotting political culture, breaking down when and where it all went wrong, and debate what it'll take for the nation to heal from this moment, be it a reckoning of virtue, kindness, or democratic will.

Jonathan also walks Lovett through the echoes of Goebbels recently displayed by Secretary Marco Rubio and Stephen Miller and why he believes the desire for a figure like Trump may have always been present within the Republican base.

  • Escaping William Branham's "The Message"

The Cult Vault returns with an interview featuring John Anderson, a survivor of William Branham’s cult of personality known as “The Message.”

John describes the movement’s post–World War II revival roots, its Latter Rain influence, and how Branham’s teachings seeded splinter groups worldwide, including extreme offshoots. He recounts being raised in the church, early memories dominated by fear and doomsday prophecy, and daily life centered on constant rule-following, listening to Branham’s tapes, and financial control through tithes and offerings. John details misogyny, demonisation tactics, and leaders’ prosperity while members struggled.

He and his wife deconstructed together, attempted to help family leave, then faced threats, excommunication, and shunning. John discusses writing a 542-page critique, American Made Volume 2 (publishing Sept. 18), offering it free to help others, and his focus on freedom, recovery, and the challenges of retaining faith after trauma.

The conversation covers the unexpected nature of World War III, which is asymmetrical and involves drones and devices. The discussion shifts to the recent explosions in Lebanon linked to handheld radios and solar installations, causing significant damage and casualties. The conversation also touches on the arrest of Sean "Diddy" Combs on racketeering and sex trafficking charges, with allegations of coercive and non-consensual sexual acts. The conversation further delves into the political landscape, including the implications of the Ukraine conflict, the role of NGOs, and the potential for further escalation. The discussion also includes a segment on the media's role in shaping public perception and the complexities of the music industry.
